Bath Brynaman – A Community Heritage Project
Join us for a full day of community, creativity and wellbeing as we open up the Bath Brynaman site and the rugby field next to the baths for a celebration of wellbeing, nature, heritage and connection.
You can find us behind the rugby club at SA18 1SW
The day begins at 9am with Parkrun, followed by the opening of the space at 10am. From there, you’re welcome to explore a wide range of free activities: yoga, breathwork, a restorative sound bath, dancing, creative workshops, forest school sessions, short tours of the baths, and the option to book a pop‑up mobile sauna session (£5 per ticket, booking essential). Drop in, wander, take part, or simply enjoy the atmosphere — daytime access does not require a ticket.
Our Community Meal & Presentation (Swper a Sgwrs) — 5–8pm is the finale of the event.
Built by local people and opened in 1934, Bath Brynaman is an important cultural and historic survival – an open-air pool built at a time of acute poverty in Wales, with local miners giving a ‘penny in the pound’ out of their wages so their children and grandchildren could enjoy the outdoors and a healthier, brighter, fun-filled future. For more than 76 years the Baths served as a valued community asset, before closing in 2010.
Those initial acts of generosity and the impact the Baths had on the lives of hundreds of local people shapes its history: and that optimism and drive – to make things better for the community – runs right through the veins and seams of our project to bring back the Baths.
Brynamman Baths was one of 57 open-air pools built in Wales in the 20th century, and today is the last remaining pool in its original condition.
Since its closure volunteers have been working hard to find a way to bring back the Baths. We’ve undertaken extensive community engagement – collecting ideas, views, memories on what was so special about the site, and what the community needs from it when it re-opens. Thanks to Welsh Government funding we’ve been able to build capacity and bring together a project design team, including experts in accessibility, engineering, sustainability and business planning, to help us develop a ‘Vision’ to support future planning and funding applications. Join us at our Summer Gathering on 20 June to find out more and have your say.
The planned refurbishment will be sensitive to the original design of the pool, introducing sympathetic adaptations – ensuring full accessibility and ease of use. Using renewable energy and sustainable materials the refurbished baths will be an open-air swimming pool fit for the future, creating opportunities for the local community to relax and unwind, connect, socialise, be active and enjoy this very special place at the heart of our community.
Our campaign is powered by people – from our local community coming to events and giving us feedback on our activities and vision, to the project team driving things forward, to volunteers helping us put on activities, get-togethers and site clean & tidy-up days, to everyone who sees our content on social media and likes and shares it. Can you help us bring back Bath Brynaman?
